Flooded with Coats

In order to help the flood victims, Dakota Ridge High School came together to donate clothes, hats, gloves, coats and other articles of clothing to give to students affected by the floods from this past September at  Milliken Middle School, and the surrounding community.  Over five hundred articles of clothing have been donated to these victims. Brandon Lovejoy, a junior at Dakota Ridge, had the idea to start this project.  In addition to Dakota helping out, many clubs such as our, Education Exploration Class, Interior Design, Christian Club, International Baccalaureate, as well our seminar committee, who spear headed the whole drive for Milliken Middle School, helped in order to make this possible.  Along with the clothes, Dakota students have made Valentine’s Day themed hearts with each Milliken student’s name written on the hearts to hang within the cafeteria at Milliken Middle School.
These donations and the hearts were packed and delivered on January 30th, 2014 to the middle school.  Thank you to everyone who donated, and to our school community, and also a very special thank you to Brandon Lovejoy for having a considerate heart for these affected families and students.

Greetings Family and Consumer Science teachers!

The Department of Design and Merchandising at Colorado State University is excited to invite you and your students to our Spotlight on Design and Merchandising Day on March 7. This is an excellent way for your students to explore our Bachelor’s degrees in Apparel and Merchandising and Interior Design here at CSU. Our day starts at 1:00 with a presentation form the Office of Admissions followed by five sessions here in the department showcasing our majors. Once the sessions wrap up, you and your students will eat dinner at the Academic Village before heading over to our annual fashion show “Rendering Reality” at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins. This year’s fashion show will showcase the lines of 23 Apparel Design and Production Seniors. Again this year, our Juniors are also busy in their Draping class putting together garments made from recycled military parachutes for the show as well.

Here is the link where you will find a  form for your students to fill out along with a schedule for the day.
http://www.dm.chhs.colostate.edu/students/undergraduate/design-day.aspx
The cost for the entire day is $25 per person and includes dinner and a ticket to the fashion show that evening. We are limited to 100 people and applications to reserve your spot must be received by February 28. If you cannot bring your class to campus, please feel free to share the information with students who are able to attend on their own.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at kendra.allen@colostate.edu or call 970-491-3254. We look forward to seeing you.

state conference 2013

This year I brought nine students to the state conference and all them competed in STAR Events. I am proud to say I had one national qualify and another gold medal winner.  I was looking forward to attending Nationals all year, but I had to make the hard to decision not to go since I would be very pregnant by July.  This was the first year I brought a male student to the conference.  I was a little nervous about this at first but everything was fine.  He decided he wanted to have a room to himself and was willing to pay the whole cost, and although he is autistic, he grew socially, independently, and educationally over the weekend.

Again, I volunteered to be an event chair for Advocacy.  I am ready to learn a new event in the coming years.  This is one of the best ways to become more comfortable with the events. It is so much fun to talk with students before and after their events.  We were located in a hallway were I was able to stop students heading to their events and ask them questions.  It was fun to give them a little boost of confidence before they headed to their judges.  Because of all the interaction between students, judges, and getting a deep look at many projects, this is the best way to learn about STAR Events and feel more confident in explaining the events and rubrics to potential competitors in future years.

Luckily, I did not have trouble getting students interested in competing at state. I was pleased with the number of students I had this year. I do not put much pressure on students because it really needs to be their drive that gets a good project done.  I set a deadline before registration was due for them to meet with me with detailed plans for how they would get their project completed. I checked in with all of them about a month later. The week before state, each group presented in front of our members and we used the judge’s rubrics to give them feedback.

As far as recruiting ideas, we will update our display board to be used at “Club Rush” in August.  When we returned from State this spring, it motivated a few new students to consider joining the chapter next year.  I personally encourage those students who really stand out as potential assets to our organization and those who need something positive in their lives.  My biggest advice to newer advisers is to jump right in and get involved at the district and state level because the teachers you will work with are very helpful and the more you learn, the more comfortable you will be in getting your students involved.

Colorado State Conference - 2012

This year, at the Colorado State FCCLA Conference and competition there were some great changes, and some challenges.   The changes that were most noted by myself and my students were the comparative ease of check-in at the hotel, which normally took several hours, and kept most waiting (some until after dinner) but this year the hotel check in at a designated registration table was very organized, and easier to manage in years past.
Another notable change was the way that the events were run.  The use of the spreadsheets for event chairs was an amazing idea, and I hope, one that continues.   My students didn’t mention the same inconsistencies with the judges as in years past, although I think that further judges training may be something to consider.
My students really enjoyed the opening speaker, and ceremony.   They also were very impacted by the speaker from Columbine at one of the workshops.   It was a very powerful message for them. The banquet was lovely, as usual.  My students also noted that the dress code was better enforced than in previous years, which was nice not only for them, but for the advisers as well.   The closing ceremonies were a little less organized however, and if I were to make one suggestion it would be to concentrate on that for next year.
In all, we enjoyed the 2013 Colorado State Conference and Competition and look forward to what next year holds.

Updating FACS Curriculum in Boulder Valley School District

Updating FACS Curriculum in Boulder Valley School District- Julie Olsen

A couple years ago when Colorado FACS was rewriting their course standards, I was excited that the classes that I taught would soon be updated and made more relevant. Little did I know at the time that those new state standards would not just trickle down to my district. We (elected FACS teachers) would have to integrate and rewrite the previous BVSD curriculum and fit in the state standards into the new district format known as Curriculum Essential Documents. While not always an exciting task, writing new curriculum for courses taught can offer value and insightful learning experiences for the teacher. First, we developed a new course overview for every class taught that everyone including parents could understand. Second, we developed new specific vocabulary and topics to be covered in addition to state standards and outcomes. Last, curriculum maps were added in each document to bridge gaps of how each course connects with reading, writing, and math skills. Overall, writing CED's have been a valuable experience as a educator and for providing better curriculum to
Students.
